No fewer than thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
