The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. During this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from superior productivity growth in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among 27 different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
